Products with history

Porcelain is a wonderfully sensual material. Porcelain’s sensuality, its character and its long history form the focal point of my work. I try to give all my works a (hi)story to take with them on their way.

In production today, (hi)stories offer location. In an era of superfluity and over-production, when everything seems to be available and

infinitely replaceable, I do not wish to design another product that has neither a (hi)story nor a soul. Porcelain has always been purchased, among other things, out of a love of the product, and I would also like to create items for porcelain lovers that offer the user or owner the possibility of associating (hi)stories with them and letting them become favourite items which he or she aims to keep for a lifetime.

LAURA STRAßER

Laura Straßer born 1981 in Frankfurt am Main, lives and works as a product designer in Weimar. During a study sojourn at the Pratt Institute in New York in 2005, Straßer availed herself of the opportunity of working with ceramics for the first time. As a result of her immediate fascination, this young product designer’s works have since then almost all have exclusively involved porcelain. Straßer transposes anecdotes, strange and intriguing aspects from the centuries-old tradition of porcelain, into the product world of today. In 2006, together with her colleague Milia Seyppel, she founded the design label "frenchnicker", under which pseudonym she distributes and exhibits her works. She has been working as a free lance designer in Weimar since 2009.
